Taiwan
Together with South
Korea Singapore and Hong Kong,Taiwan is a member of the so-called "four
little dragons".
It has 5000 years of cultural tradition of the Chinese people and protects
the old architectural relics and ancient cultures.
Surrounded by water
it has unique topographical features. Many National Parks and forest recreation
areas have been established including hot-spring sites offering the traveller
five star facilities.
Once named Formosa meaning "beautiful
island", Taiwan is approximately 36,000 square kilometers, plus 72 smaller
islands 4 of which have been developed as tourist attractions. It has a population
around 22 million people while Taipei has a population of about 2.8 million.
The size of Taiwan could be compared to the size of Holland. The Island enjoys
a tropical climate throughout most of the land, however the high mountain
peaks occasionally get snow when the humidity is at a certain level. Through
the resilience and creativity of the Taiwanese people it has become a heavyweight
in world trade and technology, it's main exports being computers and machinery.
Taiwan is a culinary heaven. After
the Second World War, many Chinese people from the mainland settled in Taiwan
bringing with them traditional Chinese cuisine from many different parts of
China. Because of this it is possible to savor food from such provinces of
mainland China as Hunan, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Beijing to name a few. Visitors
can also find Western food such as Italian and American. Food is relatively
inexpensive, plentiful and always mouth watering and one of the popular ways
of eating food is "snacking" at the many markets.
Taiwan is a shopper's paradise. Local
markets sell good quality clothes and leather, tea and fine handicrafts in
fact almost anything one could wish for.
